Freddie Fly at the Talent Show

  • Date Completed: 2/18/20
  • Client/Course: Asset Production
  • Project Desc: For this project, I was tasked with creating, rigging, and posing a character of my own design, with a background. I chose to create “Freddie Fly”, the little vaudeville bug with dreams of hitting the big time. In all, Freddie’s scene contains himself, the stage, audience, chairs, signs, speakers, trash cans, and acoustic paneling, all of which were modeled and textured.
  • Issues Encountered: This was, by all accounts, my first attempt at 3D modeling. As such, I experienced many, many issues, from navigating the software to improperly rigging, posing, etc. Rigging the character - with its many appendages and joints - proved to be particularly challenging.
Solution: My issues with software navigation and manipulation were resolved through a combination of outside help from my professor and extensive research online, typically in the form of informative videos. However, this didn’t hold true when it came time to rig the character. After watching many videos on the subject, and trying the whole process three separate times, I just couldn’t rig my character properly. Rather than spend too much time focusing on rigging - and risk not receiving any credit on the assignment - I chose to take a minor deduction and avoid the trouble of rigging altogether; this meant that I had to manually pose each of the elements which make up the character and its scene. This, as one would expect, took a very long time.
Skills: In creating this project, I acquired a basic understanding of 3D modeling, rigging, texturing, and scene construction.
